I had a wonderful time getting out of Pokhara for the afternoon. I was able to observe small family farms and men working in a rock query. Khim took me to meet a family that he has known for years; I was welcomed into their home to enjoy a cup of chiya.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TCFjDVP4kjI/AAAAAAAAAHQ/AvkmtfJvaHw/s400/DSC_0906.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485774730008498738" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TCFjWYgLYbI/AAAAAAAAAHY/I5GHhu844Ig/s400/DSC_0911.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485775057299661234" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 262px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TCFkR8DxW7I/AAAAAAAAAHg/0BCgVtb0Mfs/s400/DSC_0933.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485776080456473522" />
With the sound of thunder threatening to bring rain, we decided to head back to Pokhara. On the drive I spotted a huge decorative arch made of velvet and inquired about its purpose. Khim told me that a marriage celebration was going on inside and if I would like to stop we could. Part of me wishes we never had! As soon as we stopped the bike, a group of women spotted me and quickly rushed towards me. Before I knew it, I had been lead through a series of long alley ways which opened up to a large outdoor space where more than a hundred women, all wearing red, were dancing and drumming.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TCFmcBlZfuI/AAAAAAAAAHo/HcqX67Y8Xfw/s400/DSC_0960.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485778452761640674" />
The opportunity to witness all of this would have been wonderful...if I could have quietly observed from the sidelines! However, they had different plans for me! I was literally DRUG into the middle of all these women and motioned to begin dancing. I tried to explain that I had no clue how to do traditional Nepali dance. They didn't speak English, and if they had, it wouldn't have changed anything. For the next HALF HOUR I awkwardly danced in a small circle... trying my best to imitate what I had observed in the .02 seconds of observation I had before I became the center of attention. I guess it wouldn't have been that bad, except for ALL eyes were on me and no one else was dancing.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TCFnJ76Sq5I/AAAAAAAAAHw/kx2I3hjMf_w/s400/DSC_0939.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485779241512643474" />
I should have turned back at this point! <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TCFn5kP_hEI/AAAAAAAAAH4/rmCmmkDhOvo/s400/DSC_0946.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485780059794932802" />
Notice the underlip bitting....aka "The ultimate sign that I feel uncomfortable"
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TCFoSBVvkPI/AAAAAAAAAIA/2t73A8YHpfc/s400/DSC_0948.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485780479920541938" />
These little ones sure thought my performance was hilarious.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 284px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TCFp1kklv8I/AAAAAAAAAII/UeAaiSdQ5ck/s400/DSC_0965.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485782190185103298" />
I was finally able to free myself by motioning that I would like to give an offering to the couple. All I had with me was 500 Rupees. I wasn't about to try and make change with anyone...so I just threw the whole bill in the offering plate. I guess this was a large amount because when I placed it in the plate and said "Namaste" someone rushed towards me and placed a huge smear of red Abir and rice on my forehead. This was my first tika!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 268px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TCFryqH8HvI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/1C5TJ1hnfbU/s400/DSC_0973.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485784339159195378" />

Ansu Sen

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TBDzwh4U_YI/AAAAAAAAAHA/H--6Rv8MhPk/s400/DSC_0645.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481148761563790722" />
For the past two days I have been interviewing women and children for the new CWSDP website. Five percent of each sold item goes toward supporting local children. CWSDP teams up with sponsors from around the world who pay for monthly tuition for the child, while the 5% from the shop goes towards purchasing other necessary items like books, uniforms, lunch, pens etc. As of right now there are seven sponsored children. Six of whom I have met. I am hoping to feature a few of these children on the new website so that sponsors can directly see how their donations are helping the children.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TBDzNVwIlrI/AAAAAAAAAG4/LZu9snm9MA8/s400/DSC_0642.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481148157012776626" />
I have really enjoyed doing this and it has been a good break from being in the shop. Getting the women to be candid and open is really difficult, understandably so. But I have had a blast with the children. I've had somewhat of a stressful week dealing with some things from home and their youthful excitement and simplicity has been a wonderful thing for me to be surrounded by. I had a wonderful interview with this beautiful little girl named Ansu Sen.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TBDyvJcx4LI/AAAAAAAAAGw/Ly2WjheDdt8/s400/DSC_0648.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481147638314295474" />
Name: Ansu Sen
Age: 7 years old
Siblings: Only child
Favorite color: White
Favorite food: Strawberries and momo!
Future dream: "To be a big teacher"
What makes you most happy?: "If my mother brings me cake."
What makes you feel sad?: "If I don't get an education."
Best friend: Sabita!
If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go?: "Australia"
Why?: "I don't know. This order was placed by a really awesome young Japanese couple named Yuki and Miwa Homma. Check out their blog here: http://h-b.asia
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TAjhoKD9k8I/AAAAAAAAAF4/s7JmhSLRsVM/s400/DSC_0711.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478877026708198338" />

I met them my first night in Pokhara. We shared a meal of Dal Bat and Lassi with the Timilmshina Family. While traveling through Pokhara, they fell in love with Tara and her contagious spirit. They wanted to help the organization out in some way. Tara asked that instead of just giving money, that they place orders. So they did a blog post on their travel blog and days later had an order for more than 300 products! They were continuing on to the UAE and left me with the responsibility of packing and sending products as they were finished.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TAjgggFx9wI/AAAAAAAAAFw/cpMWlcJX9Gk/s400/DSC_0291.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478875795670824706" />

The magnitude of this order allowed for the purchase of a new sewing machine! The CWSDP started two years ago with just one machine. Today they have five. But its raining hard outside, and business is slow so I am taking this opportunity to fill everyone in!

My main goals for this project were to help the shop with marketing, product development and organization. Pokhara is a pretty big tourist hub; almost all the customers are European or American. So we have been working on making the store more appealing to these markets as well as improving the working conditions for the women. One of the main ways we are trying to do this is to organize the store and better display the products.

The first thing I did was change the display out front. Before this counter was stacked with papers and other junk. Khim took me to the large market where I found these baskets that usually hold vegetables.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TAjaG8uk5ZI/AAAAAAAAAEw/M8CqfmLEyfE/s400/DSC_0275.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478868759611762066" />
They thought I was crazy when I suggested we buy them for the store. However, they are now okay with it and suggest that we buy MORE baskets to put out front; since changing the front display they have sold more items on display than those INSIDE the store. For example: before placing these "quick grab" items out front, they were selling very few pairs of yak wool socks, coin purses etc. Now that they are visible and easy to pick up and play with, these small items are making up about half of our daily profit.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TAjdzbs9kWI/AAAAAAAAAFY/xCdjyjPWl40/s400/DSC_0286.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478872822375616866" />

While the shop has many already made bags, custom ordered bags and fabric are also possible. Despite the fact that this is a great service and product, not many people choose to do it. I am trying to change this by making custom ordering easier. The first thing I have done to change this is to ORGANIZE everything in the store so it is easier for the customer to know what they can choose from to customize a bag (fabric, strap, lining, tassel choices) We have had great success with custom ordering after changing this! Below are some before and after shots of the store.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TAjUZt24xMI/AAAAAAAAAD4/k1l6fpmUoKE/s400/DSC_0838.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478862484967834818" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TAjVFSxDc3I/AAAAAAAAAEA/0RtNxWi8njw/s400/DSC_0846.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478863233609855858" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TAjVqRcGj_I/AAAAAAAAAEI/P-XBYGxXnfY/s400/DSC_0851.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478863868908703730" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TAjW8_uApPI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/CwMuQ1tN5y0/s400/DSC_0276.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478865290081117426" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TAjXinyNDpI/AAAAAAAAAEY/s7YaPA-c4aE/s400/DSC_0278.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478865936491286162" />

Good thing organizing and color coordinating is one of my FAVORITE things to do! You should see my closet at home :)

The third thing I have tried to do is teach recycling and commit a space for it! There are lots of little fabric scraps and string that could be put to good use. The production space is tiny so I didn't have much space. I decided that a hanging basket would be perfect. It doesn't take up any floor space and is not in an area where women can hit their heads.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TAjZPw47chI/AAAAAAAAAEo/AFyxuJFeOHg/s400/DSC_0857.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478867811541152274" /> Next step is coming up with products that can be made from the recycled scraps. So far I have thought of Ipod cases and these dolls. Does anyone have any other ideas?
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TAjYe5IWdMI/AAAAAAAAAEg/9oo_DyK8YP0/s400/DSC_0312.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478866971939730626" />

Finally, I am trying to teach Tara color theory! Right now all the cotton is dyed in bright primary and secondary colors. I feel like if she were to be a bit more adventurous in her dying, she could get some really great results. She has a very natural color sense already, and I know that with this little bit of knowledge she
will do great things!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TAjcOEIKaZI/AAAAAAAAAFI/3dDqZoLVExY/s400/DSC_0875.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478871080880466322" />
Even with the little lesson, she was catching on quickly. She asked if she could keep the watercolor and the next day presented me with an entire sketch book full of color combination's that she would like to try.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TAja3SfuoDI/AAAAAAAAAE4/bhqfzY5FegM/s400/DSC_0878.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478869590088785970" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/TAjcuKZSgkI/AAAAAAAAAFQ/HMqh7ZYvk_Y/s400/DSC_0883.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478871632318726722" />

Good morning Nepal

Yesterday morning I woke up to a knock on my door and Khim calling to me from the other side, "Rita baby, its time please wake up." (Rita is the name I have adopted since everyone struggles to pronounce Rachel) It was 5 am and the weather was perfect for viewing the Annapurna range from the World Peace stupa in Damside; in the monsoon season it is difficult to get a clear view of the Annapurna range. I dressed quickly and met Khim downstairs where he was waiting with a bottle of water for me. First we took a small boat (more like a canoe) across Fewa lake, on the other side was the beginning of the trail. My knowledge of this hike was limited to what I have read in my Nepal trekking guide, and I wasn't really expecting such an incline. Khim explained to me that we were taking a different route than most people, a faster route. Faster means straight up the mountain! It felt a lot like the first 1/2 mile of the trail head from Teton Canyon, except for it was about 6 times as long. It was a great way to wake up, that is for sure! We reached the stupa around 8 am. The view was incredible, the entire range was visible and we had the whole place to ourselves.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/S_ziPrmqn3I/AAAAAAAAADI/TDB4Tw_h5XA/s400/DSC_0817.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5475500006006497138" />

View from the top

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 268px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/S_zj6rMOmAI/AAAAAAAAADQ/U5eLc05PhAo/s400/DSC_0818.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5475501844141611010" />

World Peace Stupa

I am so fortunate to be staying with a Nepalese family. Khim is a highly sought after trekking guide in the tourist season and he knows all the secrets and tricks to enjoying this beautiful area. We are planning on doing a five day trek in two weeks; either to the Annapuran Base Camp or Jomsom, depending on the rain.

Also, a few days ago Abiskar (my host brother) took me to a Buddhist monastery that is situated on the top of a hill, just on the outskirts of Pokhara. I was just in time for the 5:00 prayers (?) It started to rain while we were inside listening to the chanting. This was such a beautiful experience, I could have stayed here all day.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/S_zltcqAyXI/AAAAAAAAADY/Fn9TU0r6CQk/s400/DSC_0678.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5475503815924959602" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/S_zmOlJ1l9I/AAAAAAAAADg/RNchRl1LOuA/s400/DSC_0634.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5475504385141610450" />

I am loving all the colors and patterns... just so much visual stimulation. My eyes are seeing so many new things. I am having a hard time recording it all. I wish I had more time to sketch. I was able to find some simple watercolors in the market yesterday with the help of Abiskar. I messed around with them for a little while last night.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/S_zmvqfUhkI/AAAAAAAAADo/wuIo1lSdBhc/s400/DSC_0625.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5475504953509578306" />
I caught this little one playing hooky with his cats.

Also, I am addicted to this food. What it is, I do not know. All I know is that it is really spicy, cheap and NOT Dal Bhat :) I buy it from a man who comes by the shop every afternoon with his food cart. Delicious.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/S_znXhQqxcI/AAAAAAAAADw/6UmLt2GG0HU/s400/DSC_0825.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5475505638226970050" />

Im HERE!

After three days of travel I have made it to Pokhara. Whew...its good to finally be here. My 12 hour wait in the Delhi airport was one of the most painful waits of my entire life. Flying from Kathmandu International to the small airport in Pokhara gave me an unbelievable view of the Himalayas. I cannot believe how high up some of those remote villages are. They seem to just be built on the very edge of cliffs.

I was met in Pokhara by Khim, Tara's husband. I jumped on the back of his Kawasaki with my big pack and we were off, weaving through crowded streets of cattle, food sellers and school children. The home where I am staying is nice and secure. I have a private room and bathroom with electricity and running water.

After passing out for a few hours I woke up and organized my things. Dinner was so wonderful... Dal Bhaat. From what I understand, this is what I will be eating everyday for 2 meals a day. Rice, lentils and curried veggies. We ate dinner on the second floor deck, there was a breeze and the company was wonderful. A young Japanese couple joined us. Apparently Yuki and Maehway were traveling through Pokhara, stopped by Tara's shop and were very impressed by the project and her products. They posted a few picture on their travel blog and soon they had an order of over 100 items from friends viewing the blog. So the shop has been working overtime to fill the order. The couple is great, very kind and wants to help the CWSDP in any way possible. Despite the language barrier, we were all able to communicate quite well and enjoyed learning and teaching phrases and expressions in English, Japanese and Nepali.

I woke up this morning to delicious mint tea picked fresh from Khim's tea garden. I also had time to sit and sketch some of the plants on the veranda. It felt so good to wake up slowly, sketch, drink tea and enjoy the sun.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/S_zcLBvJROI/AAAAAAAAADA/aARI2lpfuhI/s400/DSC_0574.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5475493328978527458" />

I just visited the weaving studio. What an exciting space: Freshly dyed skeins hang from the ceiling, six women weave in the back and four sew in the middle room, the storefront is full of light and beautiful products. It sits right on the lakeside...a great location for tourist traffic.I have many ideas for the project, my head is buzzing... that will have to be my next post.

Well, I'm going to Nepal

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/S_KmLnU--wI/AAAAAAAAACw/izqPADNGuEc/s400/75524033.O2cWqfeh.PokharaAnaduWall.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472619215674342146" />

My next adventure is taking me to Nepal!

I will be living in a town called Pokhara. It's west of the capital city Kathmandu.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 221px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/S_KnaeMNHsI/AAAAAAAAAC4/GB352VquyoU/s400/Nepal_map.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472620570431266498" />

I'm working as a volunteer at the Chetana Women's Skill Development Program (CWSDP). This is a weaving co-op that is ran by a Nepalese woman. Around twenty women are at the CWSDP at this point. All of them are learning weaving and design skills. With the skills learned at the CWSDP these women are able to be self-sufficient in a largely male dominated society. My purpose in working at the co-op is to teach the women dyeing and design skills. Pokhara serves as a hub for many trekkers who are embarking on various Himalayan trek's and rafting trips, so there is a lot of tourist traffic. My goal is to help the women develop products and color stories that will be more marketable to these tourists.

I've been sent a PDF of the products produced at the CWSDP. Many of their products have very garish color stories. Hopefully I can teach a little bit of color theory in the dyeing workshop. By adding a few neutral threads to their cloth, I think we could get a really different look. Teaching the dyeing workshop is going to be my biggest challenge however because I am unsure of what kind of dye they use, at what quantity they dye the raw fiber...cost...etc.

I don't quite know what my internet situation will be like in Pokhara. I feel like my attempt to blog from Ghana was a major fail. Hopefully this time around I will be able to update more often.

I leave tomorrow evening. I asked the local kente weave master, Steven if he would be willing to let me come watch him for an afternoon. In Ghana, Kente weaving is only done by males, so I was unsure of what his response would be. Luckily he said yes! This morning I went to his residence for the first time to watch him weave. After lunch he asked me if I would like to learn, and of course I said yes! I had been sitting quietly on a stool behind him all morning watching his process, and felt pretty confident that I could do it. He was just doing a black and gold striped cloth (it was a royal cloth. black and gold are royalty colors), on two harnesses...simple stuff. haha. He spoke little english, so I couldn't really ask questions. The loom was very different than the jack looms I have worked on at school. The tension was controlled by a giant rock sitting about 50 feet from the loom, on which his length of fiber was fixed. The heddles were made of string, and the beater was fixed to a stick that was fixed above the loom. It took me awhile to get used to the positioning, I felt like I was squatting low to the ground, because I was! The pedals were just ropes with balls at the end that I positioned between my toes. He was SO surprised that I knew how to weave, he just kept laughing and covering his head with his hands, as if in shock. It was a wonderful afternoon.

Day 7:
Earlier today we took clothing, shoes and medicine to Joyce's family. Her sister just had a new baby two weeks ago and we wanted to bring them a gift. We had Joyce go through the donations we had brought so that the family would be getting things that they were in need of. It was great to be in the household of Joyce. Her family received us so well and we were able to see the newborn baby. When we brought out the gifts, everyone got so excited. It was funny because the Old "mommy" took all of the little girl sized underwear for herself. I guess in Ghana size doesn't always matter, wether its too big or too small, the fact that you have underwear at all is what is important. Tomorrow morning a 72 year old Ghanaian woman will be sporting a brand-spanking new pair of Hanes Her Way cotton panties which read "Princess" on the front.<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 268px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/S2Ss4fgxzYI/AAAAAAAAAB4/zmTwKh17xPA/s400/DSC_0069.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432657137047293314" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 268px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/S2Ss4AR7GLI/AAAAAAAAABw/BgTOxXy6yXQ/s400/DSC_0076.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432657128663488690" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/S2Ss3h60qoI/AAAAAAAAABo/PoWaEVP9dKg/s400/DSC_0079.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432657120513534594" />

I know, I know.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_PZzSAVoeX3k/S2SnH-Ud6wI/AAAAAAAAABg/gFwi7tQEKgU/s400/038.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432650805945428738" />
Since I returned from Ghana, people have asked me to update my blog several times. I have been meaning to do it, but just haven't yet. So today is the day! It's snowing outside, and I am surprisingly not TOO buried in homework. I'm taking this opportunity to add some photos a long with some short passages from the journal that I kept in country. Enjoy!

Day 1:

-- we then boarded the tro-tro and began our drive along the coast from Accra to Atorkor. It was a good way to become introduced to the landscape, and to see the general living situation and environment of the Ghanaian people. I was so tired from traveling the previous day that I was having a hard time keeping my eyes open. I was thrown from my sleep when I felt the tro-tro quickly jerk far to the right as my body smashed into the large woman next to me, who was holding a shrimp basket and a small child. A truck that we had started to pass decided to make a left turn and we had nearly had a collision. Everyone was shouting! Several men who had been sitting alongside the highway got very upset with our driver and started yelling and fighting with one him. Someone then tried to open the door of the tro-tro to pull the driver out. This whole situation was very confusing, because there we sat, in the middle of the highway, traffic behind us at a standstill, people surrounding our tro-tro all taking sides, tempers rising---and then, as if by some unspoken mediating comment, the argument ceased and we were on our way. It was as if nothing had ever happened. Within a matter of minutes everyone in the tro-tro was lulled back to sleep by the slight swaying of the unstable vehicle, sultry heat and rhythmic gospel music. I had hardly closed my eyes when again, I heard shouting coming from the exterior of the vehicle. I quickly looked around to realize that the tro-tro had come to a stand still and what seemed like hundreds of people dressed in black and red, were outside yelling, crying, shouting and walking alongside the road. There were also several large vehicles that looked like army trucks, their back's filled with people who again, were wearing black and red and wailing. The music was so loud, I was so alarmed. I thought there was going to be a riot or something. I must have looked scared because Paul tapped on my shoulder, I turned around only to see him smiling wide, saying, "don't worry, they are happy. Its a funeral."

how differently we celebrate death.

Its been awhile since I last updated. Lots has happened. Lets see....

I traveled to Cape Coast and Elmina the weekend that my mother left to go home. I visited the slave castles in both places, an experience that was moving and insightful. We also did a nature hike and canopy walk through a rainforest in Kakum national park, which has possibly been one of the best things i have done here so far. I was also able to attend my church in Elmina where I was able to meet with a friend from back home, Daniel Griffin. He is a missionary for my church and it has been almost a year and a half since I last saw him, so that was a nice surprise! I then spent a couple of nights in Accra, saw my mom off at the airport and then went to the market in Accra to secure some much needed supplies for the batik women back in the village. Im happy to say that the batiking has been going smoothly! Its been quite a long and tiring process to get it up and running but im happy to announce that we are going to sell for the first time at the market this thursday! A big accomplishment for the women.

I also got sick a couple of times so it was determined that I had typhoid fever...this wasnt so fun. I was checked for malaria, but it was determined negative and they supposed that the next most likely thing was typhoid. i have now experienced ghanaian health care and hope that i dont have to again anytime soon. It was quite the expereince....for some reason when they were doing the blood test i ended up passing out for about 10 minutes. They supposed it was due to the fact that I am anemic and my diet here has been pretty lacking in vital nutrients and vitamins, especially iron...most of the fruit and vegetables are unsafe to eat because of the fertilizer that is used. I have been living almost entirely on carbs, starches and proteins...yams, rice, plantains, beans, eggs, etc. I decided that the moment I land in JFK airport on the 20th I will buy an apple and a salad, two things I have been craving since the day I arrived!

The rainy season is coming to a close. For about the last 3 weeks it was raining everyday and our village ended up being flooded. The compound that I stay in was spared, luckily there was no damage. But directly behind the house, the area where the church is located is completely flooded, Seth the pastor of the church told me that the villagers will call the area "Lake Rachel" in my honor. haha! I was getting pretty tired of the rain, so its nice to have a change in weather. However, I am learing that in Ghana everything is a trade off. No rain means hot weather again...

Quickly to end, Obama will be in Ghana this weekend and I am making preperations to go see him...something that I am excited about. I mean common, its not everyday that Obama comes to Ghana, and furthermore its not everyday that Im in ghana! Im sure the crowds will be crazy, but im excited none the less.

My ratio of mosquito bites to marriage proposals is about equal

As I embarked upon my African adventures, I promised myself that I would try to keep any complaints to a minimum; there are plenty of things to complain about here, the heat, general sanitation issues, an almost daily loss of water and electricity, eating uncommon foods, etc. I feel like I have generally done well with my goal, until this weekend when I had my first major freak out. haha! I would like to share this experience, I find it ridiculous in hind site.

I work throughout the week and have the weekend off to travel to other areas. This weekend we found our way north to experience the Volta Region of Ghana to view Wli waterfalls, (the tallest waterfalls in West Africa) a Mona monkey sanctuary, and a Kenti weaving village called Kpetwe where I will be doing some cultural preservation research with another volunteer, Stephanie.

Transportation in Ghana is quite the experience. We rely on tro-tro's for our transportation needs. These vehicles exist in various forms, however at the most basic level they are large vans that are packed with people, (comfortably they seat 12 people, but I am yet to ride in a tro-tro with only 11 other passengers. The vans are generally packed with 15-18 people and on occasion, if it is a busy day, the number of passengers can reach 20) drivers race around the roads filled with pot holes at high speeds, flat tires and break downs are common, there is no air conditioning and generally gospel or reggae music is blaring from the blown speakers.

Our trip this weekend required us to take a 3 hour journey, transfering at several tro-tro stations. As luck would have it, there was a downpour the night before our travels that continued on and off throughout the morning. (The rain here in Ghana is a topic that deserves a whole post of its own, when I have more time.) Because of the rain, travel was a nightmare! The unpaved red dirt roads turned into a system of lakes and streams comparable to that of Volta. Before we left Atorkor I had drank about a half of a gallon of water, because I knew it would be awhile before I would reach an area where I could purchase bottled water and I didn't want to feel dehydrated for the journey. So after spending the morning in the tro-tro bumping up and down and up and down, by the time I arrived at our first transfer station I needed to use the bathroom very badly, as one could imagine. After piling out of the cramped tro tro I needed to find a bathroom, quickly. But, as I have learned everything in Africa is difficult. I was lead by the diver of our tro tro to a place to urinate, while my mom and our friend Joyce unloaded our luggage. I grew up in Idaho, camping and hiking, I know how to use the bathroom out doors and I was not worried. However, all that was there was a slab of cement with a small drain in the center...no ledge, no ditch, no hole, just a pad of cement. So my bathroom experience ended with a soaked sandal. As I write this I am embarrassed and wonder why I feel comfortable sharing...

Somehow I found my way back to my mom who was holding my backpack which was dripping with red water, apparently at one of the stations the hatch of the tro tro had been opened up and my bag had fallen out into one of the giant red lakes. So my luggage was completely soaked, just drenched in red dirt water! They had just let it fall completely into a puddle, not washing it off or anything. I lost it! I yelled, and swore and almost started to cry. For those of you who know me, and my issues with spills and sanitation, you can only imagine. I spent the rest of the weekend outfitted in red-dirt stained clothing.

I arrived safely in GHANA, and what an adventure it has been already in only 2 days...to say the least. I am writing from Keta, a large town about an hour from the village where I am staying called Atorkor. The internet costs 60 cents for an hour. I don't think I will be able to make it here often, so I'm taking this opportunity to write.

It is hot, so hot. Today the first order of business was getting my hair braided...to help with the heat. The food is simple but so good, spicy and delicious. I am especially loving the fruit, pineapple for every meal! We are staying in the chief's residence, that means we have running water which is such a blessing. Also, I understand that there are only 2 air conditioners in the entire village, one in the common room of our home, and the other in the home of Mama Keeli's house where we eat, so we have somewhat of a monopoly on the AC's. haha.

Our first night was spent under a mosquito netted bed. It gets dark early here, around 6 pm. After that time we are supposed to stay indoors because of the mosquitoes and the risk for malaria as well as our general safety. From our room we could hear "half night" which is a prayer session taking place in the church behind our house, it lasts for, as you could guess "half night" or until about midnight. It sounded like singing and celebration. This combined with the sound of goats and chickens made for a sweet lullaby to fall asleep to on our first night in Atorkor. I think I could get used to this. Until then, Mia dogo emegbe! My flight leaves in about 5 hours. Getting to the airport with our large amount of luggage is going to be a challenge. It all weighs more than my mother and I combined...we are strong women though, we can do it! I still cant believe that after my 17 hour plane ride, I will wake up tomorrow morning in Accra, then just a short 3 hour trip to Atorkor Village. I cannot wait! Hopefully I will be able to update this, I'm pretty sure my village doesn't have electricity, so that means no internet. But maybe there will be somewhere nearby, possibly Keta. Until then, wish me luck! :)

The past week has been a whirlwind to say the least. On Friday I completed my final projects and exams to close out my sophomore year at MCAD, on Saturday I moved apartments with the help of many friends, and Yesterday my mother arrived in Philadelphia. This morning was spent feverishly running last minute errands and gathering supplies and this evening has been consumed with a real-life game of tetris, we tackled the task of packing a copious amount of humanitarian supplies into two large suitcases and three 50 pound tubs. I am happy to announce that after only three hours we have successfully packaged nearly 300 pounds of humanitarian donations to meet international flight regulations.

I have been astounded by the amount of support that has been shown by many selfless people who have donated the much needed supplies that I will be taking with me to Ghana. I wish I could thank every person individually, but I would fear that I left someone out. That being said,THANK YOU to all who have so kindly given all kinds of donations, wether it be large or small your contribution will in some way bless the lives of those in need in Atorkor Village.

I am including a list of the supplies that have been donated for the purpose of showing those who might be thinking about volunteering what the possibilities of <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;
